Your Child’s Speech Therapy Evaluation – A Parent’s Guide to Success!

This guide provides valuable insights into a speech therapy evaluation and treatment process, helping you understand how you can actively engage in your child’s therapy. If you have any questions about your appointment, please don’t hesitate to call our office, we’re here to support you!

As pediatric Speech-Language Pathologists, our focus is on helping your child communicate effectively. This can include:

  • Speech Sound Production: Articulation and clarity

  • Expressive Language: What your child says and how they express ideas

  • Receptive Language: How your child understands language

  • Social Communication: Non-verbal communication, tone of voice, and participation in conversations

  • Feeding and Swallowing: Safe and efficient mealtime skills

  • Oral Anatomy and Function: Muscle tone, coordination, and movement patterns

The evaluation is designed to give us a full picture of your child’s strengths, challenges, and daily

communication needs. Your insights as a parent are critical, they help us create a plan tailored to your child and family priorities.

To prepare for your visit:

  • Observe your child’s communication across daily routines

  • Note any concerns, challenges, or areas where you’d like to see improvement

  • Bring examples to share with your therapist

During the evaluation, we’ll use a combination of interviews, standardized and non-standardized assessments, and clinical observations to understand your child’s abilities. This is not a “pass or fail” appointment—it’s the first step in a collaborative plan.

What Happens Next?

By the end of the evaluation, your therapist will discuss:

  • Whether speech therapy is recommended

  • How often sessions should occur

  • Your child’s individualized Plan of Care, including goals, areas of focus, and strategies to practice at home

Therapy doesn’t stop in the clinic—parent involvement is critical to progress. Each session equips you with tools and strategies to reinforce what your child is learning at home. This ongoing teamwork is what makes lasting progress possible.

We’re in This Together

Starting therapy is a big step, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. At Connect the Dots, we see therapy as a true partnership: therapist + child + caregiver.

We bring clinical expertise, evidence-based strategies, and guidance. You bring insight, consistency, and the everyday opportunities to practice skills at home. Together, small moments turn into meaningful progress.

You can expect:

  • Hands-on coaching during sessions so you feel confident supporting your child at home
  • Clear, practical strategies to use in daily routines
  • Regular check-ins to celebrate wins, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust plans

Your involvement makes a difference—every conversation, every practice, and every encouragement at home helps your child succeed. We’re not just supporting your child; we’re supporting your whole family through this journey.

As a CTD Parent/Guardian, we ask that you:

  • Attend all sessions (or have another caregiver attend if needed)
  • Practice recommended strategies at home and communicate openly with the therapist
  • Share updates, changes, or concerns about your child’s daily routine
  • Respect shared clinic spaces, recognizing therapy may be provided in a dynamic, play-based environment

One of the best ways to optimize therapy is to show up, be ready to learn, and actively engage in sessions.

Planning for the Future

Your child’s treatment plan is built on teamwork, progress, and adaptability. However, if your child’s progress plateaus or their needs change, therapy may be discontinued. This can feel worrisome, but it’s often an exciting sign that your child has reached a developmental milestone and is ready to integrate those skills at home. Your therapist will guide you in how to continue supporting your child’s progress through your home routine.
