Celebrating National OT month with Jillian

Happy OT month! I first discovered the occupational therapy profession when I was in college working as an independent provider for a little girl with autism. I would take her to her OT sessions every week. I remember not being too sure what occupational therapy was, but was absolutely certain that the little girl had a blast. As a pre-physical therapy major at that time I was required to perform observation hours in various settings, and somehow always found myself fascinated with what the occupational therapists were doing and with their approach to treatment. When it came time to choose between OT and PT, I felt that OT was a better fit for me. I particularly liked the holistic mindset the profession provides.

I always knew that sitting at a desk would be an impossible job for me, and the kids I work with allow me to be active and have fun. I love my job as a COTA at Connect the Dots and I am grateful to work with so many special children. It is so exciting to be a part of a journey with the child and the family as they overcome struggles and share part of their lives with me. I never know exactly what each day of “work” will bring, but I know it will be an adventure.
