Festive Feasts: Navigating Picky Eating During the Holidays

Navigating the holidays with a picky eater can be challenging, but with some thoughtful strategies, you can help make the experience enjoyable for both your child and the rest of the family.

Here are seven tips to consider:

Bring a Dish:

    • Prepare a dish that you know your child likes, if you are gathering away from home – bring it to the event. This ensures there will be something familiar and appealing for them to eat. It’s also a considerate way to contribute to the meal.

Offer Choices:

    • Create a sense of control for your picky eater by giving them choices within the available options. For example, if there are multiple side dishes, let them choose which ones they want to try. This can make them feel more empowered and willing to experiment.

Be Mindful of Timing:

    • Pay attention to your child’s mealtime routine. If possible, plan holiday activities around their regular meal schedule. Hungry children are more likely to be irritable and less open to trying new foods.

Encourage Exploration:

    • Introduce new foods gradually and in a positive manner. Encourage your child to explore and try a small amount of unfamiliar dishes. Praise them for their willingness to experiment, and avoid putting too much pressure on them if they decline.

Create a Positive Atmosphere:

    • This one is KEY. Keep the atmosphere at the dining table positive and stress-free. Avoid making negative comments about your child’s eating habits in front of others. Celebrate small victories, and don’t make a big deal out of food-related issues during the holiday festivities.

Have Snacks on Hand:

    • Pack a small bag of your child’s favorite snacks just in case they have trouble finding something they like at an event. This can serve as a backup plan and provide reassurance for both you and your child.

By approaching the holidays with flexibility, understanding, and a focus on positive experiences, you can help your child feel more comfortable trying new foods and enjoying the festivities together. From our CTD family to yours – we wish you a Happy Holiday season!
