Holiday Harmony: Navigating Transitions with Your Kiddo for Stress-Free Celebrations

Transitions can be particularly challenging for children, and the holiday season often brings about changes in routines and environments. Here are three simple tips to support your child during the holidays, especially when transitions are hard:

Establish Predictable Routines:

    • While the holidays may have a tendency to disrupt your usual routines, try to establish or maintain predictable routines during this period. Children often find comfort in knowing what to expect. Communicate these routines to your child in advance so they can mentally prepare for the changes. This might include discussing the schedule for the day, incorporating familiar activities, or commit to maintaining consistent bedtime routines.

Use Visual Aids and Timers:

      • Visual aids, such as visual schedules or timers, can be powerful tools for helping children understand transitions and manage their time. Create a visual schedule for the day’s activities, including holiday events, family gatherings, and any other transitions.
      • Use timers or alarms to signal when a transition is approaching, giving your child a tangible cue and time to adjust.

Provide a Calm Space:

    • Identify a quiet and safe space where your child can retreat if they feel overwhelmed during holiday gatherings or transitions. This can be a designated “calm down” area equipped with comforting items like a favorite blanket, toy or book. Leaving home? Prepare a calm bag for your child to have at your destination.
    • Encourage your child to use this space when they need a break, and communicate with them about their feelings and sensory needs. Keep in mind, your child may need your presence to help calm down – finding a quiet activity like reading a book or drawing together can help to reset.
    • If your child struggles to express their needs, look for signs that they may benefit from a quiet moment before they spiral.

Remember to be patient and understanding during the holiday season. Transitions can be especially challenging for children with sensory sensitivities or those who struggle with change. By incorporating these strategies, you can help create a more supportive and predictable environment for your child during the holidays.
