Summer Activities to Support OT Goals at Home

Summer is the perfect season to dive into exciting new activities that keep your child engaged and motivated. Embrace the sunny days with these easy-to-integrate, minimal-supply activities, that can easily be incorporated into your day!

These fun and engaging ideas will not only entertain your child but also support their development in essential areas such as fine motor skills, socialization, hand-eye coordination, and visual perception. By incorporating these activities into your daily life, you’re giving your child a joyful way to work towards their OT goals and helping them move one step closer to achieving them.

Keep the summer vibes high and the progress steady—let’s make this summer both fun and productive! 🌟

Hand-Eye Coordination

  • Ball Catching Challenge: Throw a ball in the air 25 times and catch it. Smaller balls are more challenging, while larger ones are easier.
  • Wall Bounce: Practice catching by bouncing a ball against a wall outside.
  • Dribble Drills: Dribble a ball with your dominant and non-dominant hand. Count how many dribbles you can get with each!
  • Play Catch: Toss a ball with a friend, parent, or sibling.
  • Target Practice: Throw a ball at a target. Painter’s tape works great for setting up targets!

Fine Motor Skills

  • Summer Bucket List: Create a bucket list of things you want to do this summer.
  • Art for Kids: Learn to draw your favorite cartoon character. Check out “Art For Kids” on YouTube for tutorials.
  • Dream Adventure Park: Draw your dream adventure park. What rides would you have?
  • Creative Coloring: Print a coloring page, tape it to a window, and color it. Or, put a plain white sheet over the coloring sheet and trace it!
  • Write a Card: Write a card to a relative.
  • Q-Tip Painting: Paint a picture using a Q-tip.

Socialization

  • Daily Conversations: Ask a family member how their day was.
  • Share and Care: Share your favorite toy with a friend or sibling.
  • Puzzle Partners: Do a puzzle with a friend.
  • Board Game Fun: Play a board game with family or friends.

Visual Perception

  • Toy Organization: Organize your toys by color, size, or type.
  • Word Games: Do a word search or crossword puzzle.
  • Collage Crafting: Cut pictures from old books or magazines and make a collage.
  • Memory Game: Play a game of Memory.
  • Keepie Uppie: Play “Keepie Uppie” with a balloon. Make it extra fun by only using your elbows or head to hit the balloon!
