Sequencing Activities to Practice at Home for Thanksgiving

SequencingWhen we sequence, we put events, ideas, and objects in a logical order. We do it all daylong—we divide our time into what we need to do first, second, and last; and we understand events in our lives by understanding the order in which they occur. For some children, sequencing can be a hard concept to grasp.

Thanksgiving is a great time to work on verbal sequencing skills. You can get as complex or simple as your child needs.

Activity:

As you go through the day, discuss the sequence of things with your child(ren).

• “We are going to set the table. First table cloth, then dishes, and last, centerpiece.”
• “We are going to set the table. First the table cloth, then the plates, next the utensils, then the glasses, and finally, the centerpiece.”

Afterward, have your child review the steps.

Activity:

Have your child(ren) tell you what they notice you doing. Or, tell them the sequence of an activity and have them repeat it back to you.

• “We’re baking a pie. First the crust, then the filling, and last, put it in the oven.”
• “We’re baking a pie. First, roll the crust out and put it in the pie pan. Then put in the filling and put it in the oven. Last, whip the cream to put on top.”

When you are done, review the sequence with them.

Other ideas:
• stuffing the turkey
• cleaning
• making decorations
• decorating
• folding the napkins

You can use sequencing to prepare your child for the day, too:
• “First, Susie and John will come over, then we’ll all sit and eat, after that, we will all play a card game together.”
