Empowering Progress: Navigating Pediatric Physical Therapy for Children with Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of non-progressive disorders that affect movement and muscle tone or posture. It’s caused by damage that occurs to the immature, developing brain, most often before birth. CP can range in severity from very mild involvement where you see kids walking, running, jumping, performing age appropriate gross motor and cognitive skills to severe involvement where their primary form of mobility is a wheelchair and requiring assistance for activities of daily living (ADLs), transfers, etc. Because CP has a wide range of severity, physical therapy treatment will be based on parent concerns and be tailored for each child’s individual needs.

Treatments may include:

  • Stretching for tight/spastic muscles
  • Strengthening to help with mobility/transfers (if applicable)
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Assessment for equipment needs such as orthosis, gait trainers, wheel chairs, etc.
    • We have established close relationships with various companies such as NuMotion, Hanger Clinic, and Summit to help get children any equipment needs.
  • Your therapist will work with you to figure out what your goals are and come up with a treatment plan to address the goals.

At Connect the Dots our therapists have years of experience working with all levels of kids who are diagnosed with CP. They are enthusiastic, positive, and passionate about what they do. What makes CTD extra unique is that we focus on play-based therapy to help children reach their goals because kids learn the most through play!
