Being Aware of Torticollis

Illustrating Torticollis
Physical Therapy can help address torticollis.

Does your baby tend to look in one direction and have a hard time looking the other direction? Is your baby’s head tilted to the side? This may mean that your child has torticollis and could benefit from physical therapy.

Studies have shown that intervening as early as possible reduces the amount of time needed for treatment, so get into see a physical therapist sooner rather than later. Torticollis can be treated through simple stretches and exercises!

Leaving torticollis untreated may lead to plagiocephaly (flatness on one side of the skull), delayed milestones, and tightness in muscles throughout the body.

To prevent torticollis, make sure to:

  • encourage your child to look in all directions by interacting with them on both sides
  • limit time in car seats, strollers, and baby swings
  • provide tummy time at least 3 times a day

If you are concerned your baby may have torticollis, please call for a free screening!
