Screen time doesn’t have to be a passive experience — with a little intention, it can become a tool for building language, connection, and creativity. Whether you’re watching a show together on the couch or using a tablet during a road trip, these strategies can help make those minutes meaningful.
Keep This List Handy
Think of this checklist as your quick-reference buddy for making screen time more purposeful. Print it, stick it on the fridge, or keep it near your go-to cozy couch spot. That way, when the TV is on, you’ve got easy reminders right at your fingertips to turn watching into learning—and everyday moments into language-building magic.
Here’s your Speech Therapist approved checklist for making screen time functional for language development:
✅ Co-view when possible
✅ Interact with your child while watching shows by pausing to talk and play
✅ Choose programs with slow pace, pauses for responses, positive themes, relatable daily routines and repetitive songs/dances
✅ Opt for content encouraging creativity and relatable experiences to aid in development of symbolic representation
✅ Engage in regulation activities like obstacle courses before, during, or after viewing
✅ Read related books after watching a show and make comparisons between the two
✅ Talk about and imitate emotions seen in characters on screen
✅ Engage in activities like dancing or running in place to pair actions to words
✅ Use pretend play to reinforce learning and help aid in vocabulary carryover
✅ Maintain a consistent screen time schedule and incorporate activities like walks or reading into the routine
✅ Ask WH- (where, when, what, who) questions, make predictions, and expand vocabulary by connecting show concepts to your own daily routines
✅ Foster special engagement by involving others in viewing and activities
