5 Fun Gross Motor Activities for Fall

Spooky Spider-Web Obstacle Course

    • For this, you can use yarn, painters tape, or streamers for your child to step over, climb under, and crawl through the “web”. Make it extra spooky by adding toy spiders and having your child move slowly while moving by them.

Pretend to be Zombies

      • Zombie sit ups are a great, Halloween themed exercise to build core strength. While laying flat on your back, lift your arms toward the sky like a zombie and “rise from the dead” by sitting up. Repeat this 10-20 times to help build abdominal strength. Bonus points for walking around the house like a zombie afterward!

Stomp and Jump on Fall Leaves

    • Crunchy fall leaves are meant to be squished! Work on motor coordination by jumping with two feet to land on crunchy leaves. Gather up groups of leaves for an extra crunch. You can also practice high knee marching and stomping on leaves to practice balance and coordination.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

    • Pumpkin patches are a great place to get some movement in during the fall, while exploring the farm to find the perfect pumpkin. Have your child practice squatting and picking up the smaller pumpkins (with help as needed!) to work on leg strength.

“Apple” Picking

    • Real apple picking is another way to get in movement during the fall, but pretend apple picking can be just as fun! You can use real apples, or pretend apples using small balls or toys. Place the “apples” on high surfaces, or tape them to the wall so your child can practice rising onto tiptoes to retrieve them. After an apple has been retrieved, have your child squat to put it away in their “basket.”
