Handling the Fourth of July with Noise Sensitivity

The Fourth of July can mean a lot of things for families. Gatherings, parades, bbqs, and of course fireworks! This year it will look different for all of us as we practice social distancing.  However, one thing is for sure, there will still be noise!

Children who experience noise sensitivity can easily become upset, agitated and anxious when they hear fireworks. They may even become anxious just by the sight of them and remembering how the sound made them feel in the past. Hiding from the noise is almost impossible, and in many neighborhoods fireworks go on for a couple of weeks. For noise sensitive children and adults, never knowing when something might crackle, boom, or explode can take some of the the fun out of the 4th.

Here are a few easy ways to help your child cope with the noise:

  • If your child is verbal, talk about the reasons behind the noise. Explain what makes the fireworks crackle, boom or explode. Often knowing why something makes a sound eases anxiety and creates curiosity.
  • Give options!
    • Offer noise cancelling headphones
    • Ear plugs
    • Ear muffs
    • Or help your child cover their ears
  • Try creating a safe place to watch fireworks from.  Consider your child’s favorite comforts to bring along, such as a favorite stuffy or blanket.
  • Watch a YouTube video about fireworks prior to having your child view them to help prep them. Here’s an example.
  • Remember your child will gauge their reactions from you. Remain calm, offer reassurance and help talk them through the experience. Explain what is happening.
  • Offer heavy work prior to viewing.  Heavy work is calming for the nervous system.
    • Pushing and pulling activities – such as crawling, bear walks and crab walks
    • Pulling or pushing a wagon
    • Ride a bike
    • Give your child a bear hug
  • Allow your child to pack a snack or activity. Often having something else to focus on can help reduce anxiety.
  • Be ready to leave or have an escape plan if your child becomes upset or distressed.

Happy Fourth of July! Be safe and enjoy your family.
