Gastrostomy tubes, or G-tubes, are medical devices that are inserted into the stomach through a small incision in the abdomen. They are used to provide nutrition, medication, or fluids to children who are unable to eat or swallow safely. While G-tubes are an important medical intervention, they can also pose significant challenges for children and their families, including the need for specialized care and management. This is where occupational therapists (OTs) can play a crucial role in supporting children and families in their use of G-tubes and developing oral feeding skills. In this blog post, we will explore how OTs can help children with G-tubes achieve greater independence, enhance their quality of life, and promote their overall health and well-being.
For children who get their primary nutrition from a G-Tube, OT’s can support:
✓Oral Desensitization
Making face and mouth less sensitive to different textures.
✓Food Play
Getting Comfortable with food and exploring interest in food.
✓Chewing Strength and Endurance
With food and/or nonfood tools.
✓Lip and Cheek Strength
For sucking on straws, and building strength to keep lips closed when eating.
✓Tongue Mobility
For moving food around and being able to safely swallow.
✓Parent Coaching
To improve enjoyment, tolerance, and safety with oral feedings.
